The movie “Unplanned” shook up the worldview of many people when it released. The movie is based on the life of Abby Johnson, who was once the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic. The movie takes a hard, honest look at the reality of abortion – not only what it is, but the business industry behind it.
It’s a heartbreaking movie, and it’s currently free to watch for anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d highly encourage you to watch it with everyone in your house mature enough to understand what abortion is. I’d even challenge you to include older kids as well – they’re growing up in a world that continues to glorify the murder of small, unborn human beings, and it’s important for them to understand what’s really going on.
When the movie released, my good friend Christ Lenoir shared his thoughts on it (link). I think he perfectly sums up the experience of everyone who watches the movie: “After watching Unplanned I can say that it is a movie I never want to watch again but I believe every person in America needs to watch.”
The movie is difficult to watch, and not for the reason most Christian movies are difficult to sit through (go learn about the Prosperity Gospel, then go watch almost any popular Christian movie). Instead, this is difficult because it’s so relevant. The horrors we see in the movie aren’t just occurring in our culture, but they’re lifted up as a sign of freedom and empowerment. The right to murder another human being who is labeled as “less important,” even “not human enough,” is applauded all across America. “Unplanned” gives us a small look behind the doors of what’s really happening.
If you’d like to learn more about the topic of abortion through a biblical worldview, I have an extensive discussion on whether the unborn are just as human, and therefore just as valuable, as a child who has already been born.
- The first article examines the scientific reason why a fetus is a human being, as well as points out the implications Christians must deal with if we truly believe the unborn are human, no matter their stage of development.
- The second article looks at the logical reasons why the unborn are fully human. I think this is an important one to understand when we’re talking to Christians and non-Christians who aren’t sure where they stand.
- The third article carefully discusses why the right to live must come before the right to choose.
- The final article caps things off with the important discussion of why God values human life and why, if the unborn truly are human, we must value them as God does.
Take time to watch “Unplanned” this week. Even if you don’t have Amazon Prime, this is a movie that needs to be seen. The world makes it easy for us to ignore the daily slaughter of human beings within our very own country – for many, this movie may be the first step in realizing why we can’t simply ignore it.
