Many Christians know the frustration of wanting the Bible to come alive, but often feeling distant and detached from what they’re reading. It’s not that we don’t believe what we’re reading, but we feel disconnected from what someone like Paul was saying to a church 2,000 years ago. We study the words, but we can easily miss the impact of them.
Of all the books in the Bible, Hebrews can be especially difficult to get through. The book is tightly packed with incredible truths about who Christ is, and that’s why I love the book. However, it’s rare to sit down and read through Hebrews without spending most of the time on just a handful of verses, taking time to chew on them throughout the day.
Of course, that can make Hebrews difficult to truly “hear” properly. It’s easier to make it an isolated series of sentences, rather than taking in a full-blown discussion of why Christ is superior to everything and everyone. And while I thought I had a good grasp of Hebrews, I recently had chapters 9 and 10 come to life for me in a completely new way.
This video shows Ryan Ferguson reciting these chapters of Hebrews from memory. Yet what’s impressive isn’t his memory, but the delivery. He recites it in the way that the writer of Hebrews likely used it – as a persuasive argument that was likely spoken aloud to a group of people.
Set aside 10 minutes and really listen to what’s being said. Get a full view of what the Old Testament sacrifices meant, and why our glorious Savior truly brought an end to the Law. Take note of the logical arguments that keep bringing glory to Christ, and why it only makes sense that we give our entire lives to the One who gives life.
I’ve listened to this several times now, and with each listen I find a new way to be in awe of Christ. The power of His death and resurrection means so much more than we may ever comprehend, and it gives so much weight to what Hebrews 11 has to say about faith. The more we see who He is, the more we realize that everything we need in life is found in Jesus Christ.
